shout out to “gross” disabled people.

people who can’t shower/bathe
people who can’t shave
people who can’t wash their clothes
people who need help going to the bathroom
people who have nasty habits (biting nails, picking nose, etc)
people who can’t brush their teeth
people who can’t go to the doctor
people who can’t clean their room
people who can’t make their beds
people who vomit a lot
people who wet the bed
people who constantly have diarrhea
people who’s physical deformities are seen as repulsive

and every other kind of person I missed that deserves to be here too.

you are people, first and foremost. your thoughts deserve to be heard, discussed, acknowledged, no matter what. you are not lesser. you are just another person. you should never be ignored for what you can/can’t do. you deserve care.

to abled people: check yourself. make sure you listen. and you can reblog, just don’t derail. maybe don’t add on, either.

happy July everyone

my favorite part of this post is seeing people in the notes whose hearts have been touched. if you don’t mind, I’d like to share a few.

keep in mind: this is nowhere near everyone. Some responses were too short, some were too long - I heavily advise you to go look in the notes yourself. And I’m sure many people reblogged this with just sorting tags or nothing at all, and that’s wonderful.

I made this post for myself, mostly. while I don’t do everything on the aforementioned list, I do apply to quite a few - but, ultimately, it was for me. I never expected it to boom like this.

And yet, it did. And that is a wonderful, wonderful thing. This post has helped people, even in small ways, something I never imagined. It’s wonderful.

so here, let me add a few more I missed. some taken from notes, some of my own.

people who pee in a bag
people who can’t brush their hair
people who can’t wash the dishes
people with stomas and catheters
people who are gassy
people who have constipation issues
people with chronic hives/red bumpy skin/MRSA
people with heavy birthmarks
people with bugs in their homes/car/etc
people with constant runny/bloody noses
people who can’t do certain things from depression
people who need help getting out of bed
people who eat in bed and have crumbs in there
people who can’t clean their sheets
people who can’t make their bed
people with shower chairs

and even more that I had to have missed. Again, please add on.

So for this July, every one after, and all the months in between, just remember: You are loved. You are not alone. The notes both below and above prove that. I promise I am not lying. You are a wonderful, beautiful person, no matter what you can/can’t do, and no matter what you look like. You deserve to be heard and listened to. Your voice and opinion matters.

CHEERS TO GUY WALTON FOR “OUTING” THE FOSSIL FUEL COMPANIES

From the article:

Walton has devised his own criteria for named heatwaves in the US, based on duration and extremity, on a one to five scale similar to hurricanes. Heatwave Chevron is classed as a four and is “historic”, Walton said. The meteorologist said he has a list of 20 oil and gas companies – including Exxon and Shell – for upcoming heatwaves and will turn to coal companies if he runs out of names.

OUTSTANDING MOVE

Y'all know what to do. Use Walton's naming system. Make it catch on.

in order to remove the sexual stigma placed on breasts, we must move past the act of shaming people who are brave enough to go topless in public. myself and another transfem friend went topless at our local pride parade not because we were trying to be "sexual" at pride, but to protest the idea that some chests are viewed as inherently sexual and illegal to be viewed publicly, while some are not. it's not a sexual act for someone with breasts to take their shirt off.

i did not have anyone give me rude or sexual comments. i received a lot of approving nods, thumbs up and polite compliments, people were even reminding me that that's the spirit of pride, and hoped that they were brave enough to do the same in the future.

sometimes it's nearly 100 degrees and people with breasts get dangerously overheated. sometimes people with breasts just don't want to wear a shirt. their breasts are not an object for you to get upset about. their breasts are not an object for you to make a moral argument about. their breasts are a part of their body, and they're not scarring or hurting anyone by existing, they are another organ on the human body and someone else's breasts are not up for you to debate about.

im so fucking serious when i say that no one is crueler to visibly disabled people than girlies with blue wolfcuts and sharp eyeliner wearing hundred dollar sweaters from shein.

like. there's a weird misconception that it's old people, but i have never once had an issue with anyone over the age of, like, 55. they are fine with me muttering to myself or making weird faces or not hearing them the first five times they call my name. that's not a problem for them. when my brother goes out with a cane, they're the ones who compliment it, and tell him the spikes and ribbons are a cute addition.

yesterday this pink haired girl in the bathroom told me that i needed to stay away from movie theaters if i was going to act like a schizo. ten minutes later an 80 year old woman complimented me on my bright red hearing aids and said she wished she had that confidence when she got hers.

anyways to the anon who just said that maybe i shouldn't be in public spaces. thank you for proving my point

a very important addition.

ok this post was originally about psychosis and plurality, but this is also a really good addition.

tone indicators are a well-intentioned idea and I'm glad folks are makin an effort to be inclusive, buuut in practice, tone indicators have had a pretty high backfire rate. I can't say I'm completely opposed to them conceptually, but they need some major tweaking if they're gonna fulfill their intended purpose more effectively

/s reads as both "sarcastic" and "sincere" so you'd be better off typin out the whole word like /sarcasm

/pos reads as "piece of shit" and altho I know it means "positive" it actually kind of ends up muddying the waters for me. it's too vague. to clarify the dynamic, try being more specific, e.g. /affectionate or /optimistic

/hj straight up makes everything even more confusing. the first dozen times I saw it, I just stared at it for five minutes tryna figure out what it stood for, and even once I found out what it stood for ("half-joking"), it didn't become any clearer how I was meant to interpret the message it was attached to. which part is the joke? at best this indicator clarifies nothing, at worst it makes things even more confusing. also it reads as "hand-job" which is fuckin hilarious but unfortunately hand-job is not a tone

/a and /c and /f and /genq and /li and /lu and /m and /nav and /nf and /nm and /npa and /nx and /p and /pa and all the rest of these damn things honestly are straight up arcane. you can't intuitively understand any of them. if the point is to add clarity to your message, then these tags shouldn't be single letters or acronyms. /a could mean anything. there are so many words that start with A. just spell out the word that you mean at the very least. as it stands, these tags are literally code, they are the opposite of accessible.

for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?

for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?

if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason

They are doing surveys that are really hard to find because their survey blog has reblogs disabled for some reason.

Short survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HS5LP3W

between tumblr being found guilty of moderating lgbtq content unequally during the 2018 ban in court and @ sorryforpartyrocking being nuked for suggesting one of tumblr staff may have investment in defending terfs to now many different trans women having their text posts and selfies being flagged as mature without the opportunity to appeal in any meaningful way (one of which was nuked herself)… it’s very. hmmmm. it’s a bad look. as if staff wasn’t already on thin ice for refusing to engage in any effective way with hate speech. “queerest space on the internet” my ass

I think that we should stop criminalizing pirating and I wish the government would give everyone $50,000 every month no matter what and I think that people should stop treating sex workers like they're scum of the earth and I wish that we all cared a little more about artists and musicians and dancers and writers and I think we should stop acting like gender and sexuality is the same for everybody and I think we should all steal a little more

You know what? Happy Disability Month to those who were disabled by accident. Cars, skis, ice, sand, rocks, horses, just plain bad luck. Broken bones and backs that never heal. Shoulders that can't lift or move right. Wrists that don't turn. Hands that can't grasp. Brains that don't work right anymore. Legs that don't move anymore and eyes that won't recover.

The shame, the blame, the frustration, the wishful thinking that tears you apart. The beauty of small victories and simple kindness. The community you build. Reshaping a life with no warning. Mourning for the person you once were. Joyfully embracing the person you now are. Happy Disability Month to you too (even if you aren't ready to use that word yet)

as my own direct immediate list of game grievances i hate that stardew valley expects you to side against a wheelchair user who is upset that he was moved without his consent. i hate that the mass effect trilogy gives you visible scarring as a direct result of choosing mean dialogue and heals it if you're nice. i hate that the vampire the masquerade ttrpg has a monstrous player class that can appear as horrible vampiric monsters or as visibly disabled people and both of these appearances are mechanically the same. i hate that dark souls games have a difficulty level implemented in a way that cannot be adjusted for disability. i hate that i can play as a mermaid or a werewolf or a horse in the sims games but can't use a wheelchair. i hate that the ace attorney games have so much flashing and not all of the games can disable it. i hate that disability is constantly something that happens to teach a lesson, i hate that disability is something that happens as a punishment, i hate that disability is either compensated perfectly with no drawbacks or something that is endlessly sought to be cured. i hate that no character customization will ever include the mobility aids i use, that the player avatars that represent me will never look like me. i am so goddamn annoyed and so goddamn tired.
